The Kyiv-based women’s movement Femen, known for their provocative campaign “Ukraine Is Not a Brothel,” is set to stage another protest on September 21. The demonstration will target the Turkish Embassy in response to what the students describe as inappropriate behavior by Turkish nationals towards Ukrainian women.
Anna Hutsol, leader of the Femen movement, announced that the protest will take place at 1:00 PM on Sunday, September 21 outside the Turkish Embassy (18 Arsenalna Street). The participants, dressed as seductive nurses armed with syringes filled with a 30% bromine solution, intend to symbolically “inject” Turkish men to suppress their libido as a humorous call for respect towards Ukrainian women.
This action, the latest in a series of bold statements by Femen, is motivated by a survey conducted in collaboration with the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Political, Sociological, and Marketing Research. The survey, which anonymously polled 1,200 female students from Kyiv universities, revealed that Turkish men top the list of those most frequently making inappropriate advances towards Ukrainian women.
Femen plans to release the full survey results during the protest, calling on the Turkish Embassy to educate their citizens about Ukrainian laws against prostitution and to warn against engaging in illegal activities while in Ukraine. Hutsol emphasized the importance of such efforts to prevent potential conflicts arising from xenophobia and racial intolerance in Ukraine.
Femen’s activism continues to draw attention to the growing issue of sex tourism in Ukraine, having previously staged other high-profile protests, including the widely publicized “Ukraine Is Not a Brothel” event.
